It seems a long time since many of us met in August 2012 in Cologne at the International Geographical Congress (IGC) where we held the 10th General Assembly of the CGB. It was so good being able to meet many members of the CGB, and particularly past, present and future Committee members, and reassuring to know that Geography has a strong presence in universities across the Commonwealth.
For me, this 11th Assembly of the CGB in Beijing is very significant, as it marks the end of my 12 years as an officer of the CGB, having been Hon. Secretary from 2004 to 2008, and then President for two four-year terms, from 2008 to 2016.
As President, I have been very fortunate in working with a fine team of Officers, notably, Professor Elizabeth Thomas-Hope (University of the West Indies, Jamaica), as Hon. Secretary, and Professor Nigel Walford, (Kingston University, UK), as Hon. Treasurer.
During my 12 years as a CGB Officer, Committee members have organised 5 capacity-building workshops in Asia, sub-Saharan Africa and the Caribbean;
